Beverly Fresh, the award-winning Chicago-based artist/musician and pig wrestler known for his explorations of cultural rituals of the rural Midwest, gets restless on PIES, his first studio album in over a decade.
PIES is an experimental hip-hop album produced by Detroit’s Blair French (Dial.81) on the Detroit/Chicago underground label SUPERIORBELLY (est.1998). In 14 tracks, the vinyl-only record reinterprets several strange-monologues and acapella screamers from Beverly’s fifteen years spent traveling the backroads for his OUTSKIRTS performance series in which he survived a dynamite blast, disturbed a pancake breakfast, lost a demolition derby, and was crowned rooster crowing champion.
Beverly says his new album “sounds like corned beef and Stetson. Behind the car wash. Salvation blasted out a blown bazooka tube. Like pissing your name in perfect cursive in the snow. Like losing your mind at the grocery store. It’s mad, silly, and sweet.”
Since releasing his 2011 off-kilter boom bap studio album BED, the self-proclaimed “neighborhood weirdo” has been busy performing in basements, backyards, country fairs and tent revivals, created multimedia exhibitions for major museums (including Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, the Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and the DePaul Art Museum in Chicago), made a feature film, curated and designed the experimental art catalog Really Somethin’ Else (University of Chicago Press), and taught and lectured internationally. His accolades include testing his sweet-tooth breaking the world record for catching the most Whopper candies in his mouth, compiling the tallest stack of rap cassettes and being awarded the 2021 Meier Achievement Award for mid-career Chicago artists.
Blair French is a Billboard charting multi-genre producer and composer known for the award-winning score to the documentary film Detropia (Sundance, Cinema Eye Honors). The song “Big All Over,” features guest vocals from Nosaj of New Kingdom who has also collaborated with Talking Heads, Tricky, and Armand Hammer.
